BIG CATS IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

The evidence & the implications

An illustrated talk by Rick Minter, followed by book signings

12 May 2pm, Erwood Station Craft Centre & Gallery

Rick Minter, author of the new book on big cats living wild in Britain will be speaking at Erwood on 12 May.

BIG CATS  Facing Britain's Wild Predators Whittles Publishing

www.whittlespublishing.com/Big_Cats

The talk will...

- Present the evidence for big cats living and breeding in Britain

- Discuss the implications of feral big cats for people, for farming and rural activities, and for wildlife

The talk will be followed by questions and discussion

The book will be on sale and the event will conclude with book signings

BIG CATS Facing Britain's Wild Predators was published in December by Whittles. It has received many positive reviews and is regarded as a breakthrough on the challenging subject of feral big cats.

Quotes from Rick Minter:

"Across Britain, including in parts of Wales, there are more reports of possible big cats than people might think, and while not all seem plausible, some sightings are reinforced by the reaction of a person's horse or dog. As a general rule, three quarters of sightings each year are of a black panther, often around the size of a labrador dog, and a quarter are of a sandy-grey cat, of similar scale, which resembles a puma. Witnesses often remark on the animal's stealthy movement, and sometimes even the calls of a big cat such as a puma are heard.

Landowners mostly don't want the evidence to be widely known, but they appreciate having a quiet word with people who study the subject. People understandably have mixed emotions about these animals, and views can vary amongst different family members. Part of the book's message is that we should consider this subject responsibly, and start to study these elusive animals, so we learn as much as we can about their secret lives.

Christmas Extravaganza—Friends only LINK

Christmas 2009

The ‘Friends of Erwood Station’ celebrated 2009 with a relaxed evening at Erwood Station Craft Centre, with a performance from the wonderful Welsh artist Loraine King.

lloraine King on the picnic site

The evening was packed out with over 60 people, so get your reservations for this Christmas in for the next one. (To become a friend see the friends page)

Lorraine King, singer / songwriter performed in the Rhondda on the evening of the 18th. But agreed to come along to our Christmas gathering on her way and sing a couple of songs from her new CD.  (She is the artist performing on the Erwood Craft Day 'You Tube' video singing, 'Lovespoon') We are pleased she agreed and we had a great 'early evening'.

It was a great chance to meet all the ‘Friends of Erwood Station’ in an informal way.

Friends of Erwood Station

Wine and light bites were provided and a mulled apple juice and cinnamon drink for the drivers, with many people helping with light bites and their own cocktails, the evening really went down a storm.

Friends of Erwood Station Ga the Badger man and John filmed the loco project

This was also a chance for us to celebrate that as a group of friends we successfully sought out and acquired grant funding from ‘Glasu’, from the welsh assembly government and the European economic community, we raised enough money to offset the grant funding of £20,000, and also to keep the volunteers and involved businesses with free tea / coffee and cake supplied by ‘Erwood Station Craft Centre and Gallery’, there were over 2000 man hours put into the project on a voluntary basis, and we were then gearing up for the first stages of the interpretation panel creation. (now finished and in pride of place in the pic nic site.)

Mat Pan, Dave Perks and Ezra Gaster What a wonderful wet day

The project couldn't have gone ahead without support and interest from all the friends and over 30 volunteers and businesses involved.

Now that we have a basis to work from there are many project for the future, as a friend you are not required to attend meetings or volunteer but will always be invited.
